Local outlets stated that armed men attacked the president’s residence in Cotonou at dawn on 7 December but were unable to take it. Several media organizations reported that President Patrice Talon “is safe”.
Benin’s Foreign Minister, Shegun Bakari, said that “a large part of the army and the national guard remain loyal to the state and are in control of the situation”.
According to Jeune Afrique, the attempted takeover began when a group of soldiers tried to storm the presidential residence but were repelled by loyalist units. The outlet also reported that another faction managed to seize control of the national television channel, which broadcast continuous coverage until the signal was cut.
Before the interruption, the mutinous soldiers announced the creation of a “Military Committee for the Refoundation”, declaring the suspension of the Constitution and the dissolution of state institutions and political parties. They also proclaimed the closure of Benin’s borders and accused the government of “depriving certain citizens of the right to choose their candidate”, approving laws that “generate crises”, and forcing some citizens into imprisonment or “exile”.
In response, loyalist forces launched a counteroffensive. Reports indicated that helicopters were flying over Cotonou as the army secured the city center and cordoned off surrounding areas.
Authorities say operations to restore full security are ongoing, while assessments continue regarding the extent of military involvement in the unsuccessful uprising.
